Insect Project
At Wiggles and Giggles Wentworthville, we identify children’s interests and follow their lead in providing interest-based learning experiences to further extend their learning. Throughout this month, the children were so fascinated with insects and bugs and LOVED getting outside and exploring bugs and new creatures in their worlds. They had a lot of fun finding insects and catching them on the ground, trees, shrubs, flowers, and in the air. To support children’s curiosity and utilise these as teachable moments, we started a Group Project on the Insects & Bugs theme with our children, where we engaged in plenty of interesting learning activities such as art & crafts, sensory play, investigations on bugs and insects, manipulative skills-based experiences and many more. Our Group project interest-based learning experiences are planned to further extend children’s learning related to school readiness such as to improve their pre-reading, pre-literacy and numeracy skills. For example, children were engaged in reading a lot of books about bugs & insects, discussing with educators and peers the names, colours, and body parts of the bugs developing their language and communication skills. We used glass-based insect specimens or natural materials such as rocks, sticks, or leaves as manipulatives for many learning activities to teach math and literacy concepts. Children loved participating in counting songs about insects such as practising counting to 10 with theĀ 10 Little Butterflies song, ladybug songs etc. The children also showed enthusiasm in art and craft activities related to bugs, sensory play experiences such as making playdough insects, exploring insects stuck in slime etc and developed their creative thinking and fine motor skills. We also researched and learnt about the life cycles of various insects and had learning activities such as matching, sorting, counting and creating patterns related to insects.
We will continue to identify children’s emerging interests and provide a wide range of interesting environments, and activity setups that will engage the children in various aspects of learning.
